A clip from Global News on who found Theo.
A clip from Global News on what happened after he was rescued.
I found out this morning that Theodore the harbour porpoise rescued this summer close to Victoria, BC died last night at the Vancouver Aquarium.

I'm having trouble finding much information on this story and what has happened, but I here is what I know so far:
  • Theodore was found and rescued July 24th, 2012 on First Nations land in Esquimalt, B.C.
  • He arrived at the Vancouver Aquarium on July 25th at 3am.
  • Theo was kept in a tank in a sling that helped him float since he was too weak to swim on his own.
  • As he slowly made progress, Vancouver Aquarium seemed hopeful that they would be able to release him back into the wild.
  • He passed away last night (October 4th, 2012).
If you have any information on the cause of his death or anything in regards to this story, please feel free to email me.

Rest in peace sweet soul.

Narnia the Orca Captured in Russia

So I wanted to give you guys the latest update on that young orca I mentioned in my last post that was captured recently in Russia. Here is what we know so far in point form to make it easier to digest and share with others.
It looks like she's asking for help... It breaks my heart to think of the life humans have chosen for her. I can't believe this happened. Have the humans learned nothing!?
  • This young female orca has been given the name Narnia.
  • She is approximately 6 years old judging by her size.
  • She was captured by Sochi Dolphinarium in the Western Okhotsk Sea near Reineke Island.
  • Narnia was one of two orcas captured at the time. The other one has since passed away.
  • She has been sold to an aquarium in Russia that will be opening this year.
And this is the aquarium to which she will be moved. What a weird looking tank... Look how tiny it is! What a horrible looking place. A lot of people are feeling like she may not live long enough to see this new "home."

Another example of the superior intelligence of humans. WAY TO GO.

So what can we do!?

OK! So you want to know what you can do to help? Well here it comes!
1. Put pressure on the Russian government/fisheries to put an end to the capture of cetaceans!
Sending letters, emails and faxes is a great way to help! Tell your friends and family to do the same! Here is a link with loads of information as well as sample letters in English and Russian and where to send them:
http://cyberwhalewarrior.com/2012/09/29/stop-the-live-capture-of-orcas-in-russia/

2. As always, sign petitions!!!
Here is the only one I have seen so far! If you have any more for me to add to the list, please let me know ASAP so I can add it!

3. Share the information!
If you are on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, YouTube or any other social media site, then you have a perfect opportunity to take advantage of it! Share posts and photos! Link people back to this site or to any of the information I have posted! Urge people to open their minds to the reality that what these people are doing is wrong! Please! All it takes is the click of one share button to start a chain reaction that bring about real change!

If you have anything to share or anything you would like to see me add in the information, please let me know and I will check it out!

Thank-you for taking the time to read this!

IMPORTANT UPDATE

OK guys, something really terrible has happened and I'm going to need you breath and be aware that this is the direct result of humans keeping these great beings in captivity.

On September 20th, 2012 Nakai (an 11-year-old orca at Sea World San Diego) was seriously injured during a night performance with two other whales. Sea World is claiming this was a result of him getting caught on a portion of the tank. The rest of us believe that this was the result of an attack by one or both of the other whales. Looking at the wound it looks like it was bitten clean off. And anyway, if Sea World had any brains at a, they wouldn't claim it was their tank since that would only illustrate that they do not keep their whales in a safe facility.

The image below shows the extent of the damage.
Photo from Tim Zimmerman's Tumblr.
The missing piece was recovered from the bottom of the tank. There has been some talk by others on various forums, facebook pages and blogs about potentially reattaching the missing piece, but according to many this is not likely as the forces in the water would prevent it.

Nakai's biggest problem now is infection. He is being given a lot of antibiotics to help and they are apparently using honey as a topical solution to help with the infection.

How can we let this go on? How can we let these humans get away with this? These whales were put in this situation and all of this wouldn't have happened if not for the greed of humans.

Please keep Nakai in your thoughts and share this story with everyone you can.

If you have any updates on how Nakai is doing or any photos to share, please email us!

Hey everyone! Sorry about the lack of consistent updates! I finally have some updates, videos and information to share! I'm going to start off with some videos since everyone loves moving pictures!

YouTube

Here are some of the photos and video footage from the Dolphin Slaughter Protest that happened last month here in Vancouver, Canada.
Here is a video that Mermaid Kim and I put together and dedicated to captive cetaceans around the world.

Update on the Dolphin Slaughter

The latest news, on top of the slaughters that have taken place so far, is that one bottlenose dolphin, out of the 7-10 that were captured, was selected for a life in captivity in a swim with dolphins program in Taiji. The rest of the pod was released. No family should have to be separated like that.

How can I help stop this?

As always, I have included some links and information for you to check out that will help you actively contribute to bringing a stop to the horror.

ORCA ALERT!!!

According to End Killer Whale Captivity, an orca has just been captured in Russia. Apparently there were two but one has since died. I've used a translator on a couple of Russian forums and it looks like the whales were intended to be sold to another facility. The whales were caught in August as far as I can see.

PLEASE! If you have more information on this I would really appreciate a reply or an email! I will keep researching and keep you all updated on the status of this unfortunate situation!

Upcoming Events

There will be a protest held outside the Vancouver Aquarium on October 7th, 2012 between 11am and 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come and hold banners and hand out flyers. This protest is specifically relating to cetaceans in captivity.

I will be appearing as the Vancouver Mermaid as well to protest.

If you can't make it, I would be very grateful if you sent a polite email to the Vancouver Aquarium asking them to stop their plans to bring in more captive cetaceans. Thank-you!

To Sum Up

Thanks for taking the time to read through my massive post! I will do my best to be a little bit more regular when it comes to posting information to avoid so much text.

Keep swimming!

We were too late to save these souls, but that doesn't mean we can give up! We need to work harder than ever to get the message out there! Please, tell everyone you can about what is happening in Taiji, link them to the post I did on the Japan dolphin slaughter and urge them to do whatever they can to help stop this.

Now is the time to make our opinions on this matter heard! We need to do something now! Below I'll outline the details, post some petition links as well as the links to where you can make a formal comment.

The Georgia Aquarium is requesting authorization to import 18 wild caught belugas from Russia (the Utrish Marine Mammal Research Station). These whales have already been caught, six will end up at the Georgia Aquarium and the rest will be distributed among the various Sea World locations (Florida, Texas, California) and to Shedd Aquarium.

These whales will be for the purpose of public display, not research.

FreedomForOrcas did a Vlog on this not too long ago and she shares some information and her opinions. I strongly recommend take some time to hear what she has to say. Here it is below:

What You Can Do:

Sign Petitions
Below are some of the petitions I have been able to find regarding this issue. Please sign and share them!

Submit a Formal Comment
This is the really important one. Since this is the time now where the public gets a say we really need to make sure we are getting as many people as possible to make a formal comment. The site address on which you can submit a formal comment is:

Since they make you jump through a few hoops to get to the email portion, here is the direct link as well in case you have trouble finding it.

All comments are due: Oct 29, 2012 11:59 PM ET

Thank-you for taking the time to read through this and please make sure you send in your comments! We need to make sure our voices are heard before it's too late for these whales!

It's that time of the year again... I've been dreading this post knowing what's coming for 20,000+ cetaceans this year in Taiji. So what I'm going to do is give you guys some statistics and info along with links, videos, petitions and other information that you can share. I figure it's best if it's all in one place to make it easier since this can get pretty depressing pretty quick.

I know how upsetting all of this is and I know this is going to be a long post, but please try to make it to the end. These dolphins desperately need our help!

The Footage

I've rated the footage based on how graphic I find them to give you fair warning when you are watching/sharing them. *= Some gore and blood, *****= Horrifying beyond belief. Of course all of this footage is heart breaking and horrifying, so it's hard to rate, but here they are anyway.

Graphic Footage - ****

Some distubing footage on the transport of the dolphins that will be sold to aquariums and what happens to the ones left behind.

Here is the link to the YouTube user mentioned near the end. http://www.youtube.com/user/KahakaiGirl

Graphic Footage - **

An interesting film I found that talks about the slaughter, the film the Cove.

While this is an older film (2009), nothing has changed. This is still happening!
Graphic Footage - *

Good footage of what leads up to the slaughter which you can't see because it's hidden by tarps.

The Facts

I have collected this information off of various websites, all of which can be found on our Resources page and many of which I will list below this post. I will list these in point form to make it easiest to digest and share with others.
  • 20,000 dolphins, porpoises and small whales are slaughtered each year in Japan.
  • The slaughter starts on September 1st and generally continues through to March of the following year.
  • Cetaceans are herded into the cove where they are contained using nets.
  • They are then stabbed and drowned.
  • The meat is toxic as it contains very high levels of mercury and is not safe for human consumption.
  • The more attractive dolphins are picked out and sold to amusement park aquariums around the world where they will spend the rest of their lives swimming in circles, performing tricks in a swimming pool prison.
  • It is thanks to the purchase of these dolphins that this horrifying event continues. Dolphins sold to these marine parks sell for significantly more than those sold for meat.
  • For the dolphins who didn't die from being stabbed or from being hauled by the tail into the bay (many drown this way) they meet their end when they are cut open and gutted.

What We Can Do!

Don't let anyone tell you there is nothing we can do. We all have a voice and if we have the will to make a change, it can be done. It must be done. That being said here is a list of ways you can get involved and show your support.

Join the Peaceful Protests on Sept 1st!
Find out where the Japanese Embassy is where you live and look on facebook to find out if any peaceful protests will be held on Sept 1st.

Spread the Word!
Please spread the word! Tell anyone and everyone! Please encourage them to take 15 minutes out of their day to watch some of the videos I have provided and read up on some of the facts. Then encourage them to share the info!

Don't Visit Aquariums With Captive Cetaceans!!!
I can't stress this enough! Please don't visit these awful theme parks that keep whales, dolphins and porpoises captive! It's thanks to these places that the dolphin slaughter continues on! If they weren't funding it by buying the dolphins, it would be a lot easier to put a stop to this horror! Please encourage others to do the same!

Send Positive Energy
I know some of you will roll your eyes, but a lot of people (including myself) strongly believe that one can influence change by using their own energy. If you can, please take some time of your life over the next few months to be calm and send your positive vibes to those thousands of pour souls in Taiji who will die this year.

Thank-you!

I would like to say a huge thank-you to those of you who made it all the way through my epic post. I know it's hard to digest, but I love you guys for trying. Please do whatever you can to help! Even the little things like sharing this site will help make a difference! Thanks so much!

Sincerely,
Courtney Mermaid

What's the Problem?

After a former trainer from Marineland came out and spoke against the park's cruel treatment of their animals and the foul, toxic water that they are being housed in, attention is finally being paid. Now if only we can keep it rolling...

Basically the animals are suffering many ailments due to the extremely poor water quality and lack of attention paid to this serious issue.

Now let me give you an example of a personal experience of mine...

As a professional mermaid, I spend a lot of time in chlorine water at various pools around town. When training I wear goggles, but when I perform I don't since who wants to see a mermaid with goggles on right? Now to be clear, I can't actually see more than light, dark, colour and various shapes underwater, but I do keep my eyes open underwater to complete the mermaid look.

For one of my videos I was doing a Q&A session where I was answering some of the more popular questions I get asked. Earlier during my swim I had encounter many small children who wanted to see some of my tricks. After having spent about two hours, a good chunk of it underwater with my eyes open, I was starting to feel pretty awful. Then I did my interview and by then my eyes had already started to go. By the time I was dropped off at home, a white fog was clouding my vision. I got upstairs and rinsed my eyes again and laid down on my couch. I dozed off for a minute or two and when I woke up I had about 20% of my vision left. I could barely open my eyes and could feel with my fingers that my eyes were really swollen. This lasted almost four hours, most of which I was in a lot of pain with an icepack over my face. I couldn't see well enough to find my phone to call for anyone either and I was alone.

Now that was only a two hour experience in chlorine water. Imagine living your life in it everyday! Imagine the searing pain, the swollen eyes, the constant white, frightening fog! Not to mention the raging headache!

Watch me in this video, if you have time, and see how I squint and how red my eyes are. I try really hard to make it look like it doesn't hurt, but it really does, especially at the part where I swim under and come up with my eyes open.

What can we do about it?

Here are some things we can do! First off I would recommend checking out Marineland Animal Defense if you haven't already done so! They have a lot of information on their site that is really worth checking out!

They also include contact information for Libby Davies (an NDP member who, years ago, introduced a private members bill to close the loophole that allows for which allows wild caught cetaceans to be imported into Canada despite the fact that we don't allow cetaceans to be caught in the wild in Canada) and how you can get in touch with her. For more information on who she is, please check out the post on Marineland Animal Defense. They have her email and various phone numbers as well.

I did a search on Change.org for Marineland petitions that you could all sign and here is what I've come up with so far:

http://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/save-marineland-s-animals
http://www.change.org/en-CA/petitions/marineland-ontario-stop-profiting-from-animal-cruelty#

Please, if you have any more petitions or any more information on this, please comment or send us an email!

I leave you with this inspiring video of protestors outside Marineland on August 18th, 2012.

On the left is a video I found on YouTube of Shouka at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in 2008.

Shouka is a 19 year old Orca who was born in Marineland Antibes in France. She was taken away from her family (mother, father and her siblings) and moved to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in 2002.

Having been on her own for the last 10 years, 7 of which she had the company of dolphins. After Merlin, a wild captured bottlenose dolphin who had been housed with her was moved to a different area of the park to be with the other dolphins, Shouka was left alone.
They had tried to import another orca named Kshamenk (living in Mundo Marino in Argentina) but that didn't worked out and poor Shouka has been alone since November 2011.

So last night Shouka was packed up and moved to SeaWorld San Diego...

I think my biggest question is why was she not returned to France and her family? I am digging and digging to find more info on this, if anyone has anything to contribute, any links for me to add, please leave a note in the comments! Thank-you!

So I'm cruising through my usual Saturday morning ritual of getting caught up on anything I missed this week and I started with FreedomForOrca's YouTube page only to find out that Kohana gave birth to her new calf (who's been named Vicky) and she has rejected her.

I am really looking forward to hearing what information FreecomeForOrca's has on this. I of course started digging as soon as I read her message and I have come up with quite a bit of disturbing/sad information.

Loro Parque is still calling this some kind of triumph for their breeding (I would rather say inbreeding here) program. Inbreeding? Yes, inbreeding. If you have time to check out what I found on this, here is the link to the page on Digital Journal where Elizabeth Batt explains it.

http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/331012

What makes me really sad is that Kohana has also reject Vicky. For anyone not aware, Kohana rejected her first calf Adan in 2010. Kohana was 8 years old when she become a mother for the first time. Only 8! As referenced in the article from Digital Journal (link above): The Center for Whale Research, says female orca in the wild, "give birth every three years starting at age 13." Also, according to National Marine Mammal Laboratory, "whales usually give birth every 3 to 10 years."

Despite the fact that there is another young orca on record for giving birth younger (about 10 years old) than the age above in this article checked out this morning at SeattlePi.com, it's my opinion that she was too young and doesn't have the experience needed to even know what to do with her new baby.

This was really irresponsible of these humans to bring another little orca into this world. Vicky is a rejected, inbred prisoner sentenced to life in a swimming pool all for the entertainment and greed of humans.

Here is the video off of the Loro Parque YouTube channel. Poor little one...
