A clip from Global News on who found Theo.
A clip from Global News on what happened after he was rescued.
I found out this morning that Theodore the harbour porpoise rescued this summer close to Victoria, BC died last night at the Vancouver Aquarium.

I'm having trouble finding much information on this story and what has happened, but I here is what I know so far:
  • Theodore was found and rescued July 24th, 2012 on First Nations land in Esquimalt, B.C.
  • He arrived at the Vancouver Aquarium on July 25th at 3am.
  • Theo was kept in a tank in a sling that helped him float since he was too weak to swim on his own.
  • As he slowly made progress, Vancouver Aquarium seemed hopeful that they would be able to release him back into the wild.
  • He passed away last night (October 4th, 2012).
If you have any information on the cause of his death or anything in regards to this story, please feel free to email me.

Rest in peace sweet soul.

Narnia the Orca Captured in Russia

So I wanted to give you guys the latest update on that young orca I mentioned in my last post that was captured recently in Russia. Here is what we know so far in point form to make it easier to digest and share with others.
It looks like she's asking for help... It breaks my heart to think of the life humans have chosen for her. I can't believe this happened. Have the humans learned nothing!?
  • This young female orca has been given the name Narnia.
  • She is approximately 6 years old judging by her size.
  • She was captured by Sochi Dolphinarium in the Western Okhotsk Sea near Reineke Island.
  • Narnia was one of two orcas captured at the time. The other one has since passed away.
  • She has been sold to an aquarium in Russia that will be opening this year.
And this is the aquarium to which she will be moved. What a weird looking tank... Look how tiny it is! What a horrible looking place. A lot of people are feeling like she may not live long enough to see this new "home."

Another example of the superior intelligence of humans. WAY TO GO.

So what can we do!?

OK! So you want to know what you can do to help? Well here it comes!
1. Put pressure on the Russian government/fisheries to put an end to the capture of cetaceans!
Sending letters, emails and faxes is a great way to help! Tell your friends and family to do the same! Here is a link with loads of information as well as sample letters in English and Russian and where to send them:

2. As always, sign petitions!!!
Here is the only one I have seen so far! If you have any more for me to add to the list, please let me know ASAP so I can add it!

3. Share the information!
If you are on Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, YouTube or any other social media site, then you have a perfect opportunity to take advantage of it! Share posts and photos! Link people back to this site or to any of the information I have posted! Urge people to open their minds to the reality that what these people are doing is wrong! Please! All it takes is the click of one share button to start a chain reaction that bring about real change!

If you have anything to share or anything you would like to see me add in the information, please let me know and I will check it out!

Thank-you for taking the time to read this!

Hey everyone! Sorry about the lack of consistent updates! I finally have some updates, videos and information to share! I'm going to start off with some videos since everyone loves moving pictures!

YouTube

Here are some of the photos and video footage from the Dolphin Slaughter Protest that happened last month here in Vancouver, Canada.
Here is a video that Mermaid Kim and I put together and dedicated to captive cetaceans around the world.

Update on the Dolphin Slaughter

The latest news, on top of the slaughters that have taken place so far, is that one bottlenose dolphin, out of the 7-10 that were captured, was selected for a life in captivity in a swim with dolphins program in Taiji. The rest of the pod was released. No family should have to be separated like that.

How can I help stop this?

As always, I have included some links and information for you to check out that will help you actively contribute to bringing a stop to the horror.

ORCA ALERT!!!

According to End Killer Whale Captivity, an orca has just been captured in Russia. Apparently there were two but one has since died. I've used a translator on a couple of Russian forums and it looks like the whales were intended to be sold to another facility. The whales were caught in August as far as I can see.

PLEASE! If you have more information on this I would really appreciate a reply or an email! I will keep researching and keep you all updated on the status of this unfortunate situation!

Upcoming Events

There will be a protest held outside the Vancouver Aquarium on October 7th, 2012 between 11am and 2pm. Everyone is welcome to come and hold banners and hand out flyers. This protest is specifically relating to cetaceans in captivity.

I will be appearing as the Vancouver Mermaid as well to protest.

If you can't make it, I would be very grateful if you sent a polite email to the Vancouver Aquarium asking them to stop their plans to bring in more captive cetaceans. Thank-you!
